Hey everyone,
 
I currently own a set of Sennheiser PC-360, something happened that requires me to RMA it. Now a friend of mine offered me 180 for it when I get it back. I was wondering if this is worth it? I've had my eye on a the H598s for a long time. I love how the look and I heard they're unmatched in gaming. Would it be worth the +$70? Should I stick with the PC-360? or is there a headset out there even better than the HD598s for under 250?

Since when has the 598s been king of gaming? I always thought it was the AD700 for its ridiculously enormous sound stage, or the AKG 701/2? I never listen to the AKG though.
 
If you want a competitive headphone, I honestly don't think the AD700s can be beat. The price is a huge plus too.

That's one thing I've always been confused about. One of the major arguments for HD 598 is that they're "fun". What does that even mean?

Fun means they have a sound that isn't too sterile.

HD598 is also a very good pair of headphone for slow music listening! Very forward yet nice mids it got! BUT if you are a basshead, HD598 is definately not for u.

Under $500 is a BIG claim, maybe under $300. But still, the 598 lacks bass impact and quantity, but they're pretty ok with most genres of music, easy to listen to, never fatiguing.

Besides other things I use my headphones for (cough cough, music) I actually play a lot as well, even though I am already on the older side. Especially for FPS the HD598 gives you the edge due to his spatial awareness. You just know where your foes are coming from. I would say, from all my headphones, it's still the king of gaming for sure.

Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking of going the AKG Q701 but the fact that I'd need an Amp changed my mind. I'll be ordering the HD 598s. To bad I can't find it cheaper than 250 for a new one.

Don't know what wnmnkh is talking about with the AD700s not being "fun"? The sound stage is enormous, fun enough for me. Also, the HD598 does NOT have a bigger sound stage then the AD700s. Sorry. So paying $250 for it is a ripoff IMO when you can get the AD700s for $100 new on Amazon. You don't need to amp to use them either.

I would say K/Q70x is better for gaming than the 598.  Both are good though either way.

By "fun", they probably mean something like Mad Lust Envy's "immersive" definition: bassy. Which the AD700s are most certainly NOT.
 
Anyway, as for what headphone is best for gaming IMHO (more in a competitive "pinpoint positioning" and comfortable "I can wear it all day" sense), I'm still handing it to the vintage Stax Lambda lineup out of everything I've heard...but you'd have to be extremely lucky to score one of those for $250, not including the amplification of the sort all electrostatics require. For strictly gaming, an AD700 is much more cost-effective.
