is the audible difference really THAT significant? is it worth the extra $150?

isolation matters not...

edit: nevermind, newegg just bumped the HD580s to 200 bucks...blah!

To answer the question anyway...

There is a prefound difference between the two, but its not a case of which one is best, and which one is worse, its a case of which style of listening you prefer...

But, another story for another day

lol... ok, briefly

To me... the Etymotics are better for critical listening... in my opinion they strip pretty much ALL emotion from the music... if the song / source is poor... then they don't cover that up, they show you it in crystal clear clarity which can be, on odd occasions, very off-putting... but on the most part the ETYs are fantastic... especially for their size!!

The Sennheisers to me are better for when you just want to hear the music, rather than listen to it (if that makes sense) ~ whilst probably not as accurate tonally as the ETYs, they are more musical (to my ears)

How much that changes when you listen to the ER4S, unfortunately I don't know... but hopefully someone else can add something here??

Hope its of help?!
