Ok, so I have a $150 gift certificate to Amazon.com (thank you credit card rewards

). I have read nothing but praise about the Sennheiser HD580's and was all ready to order them with no out of pocket costs from Amazon.com with free shipping.

Then I see the HD595 for $249 at Amazon. Is it worth spending the $100 for the HD595 or stay with the HD580 for nothing? Anyone here own both? Is the HD595 that much better?

I am going to try to get to J&R and demo both but any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

If you ask me - the HD580's a better headphone for music. The HD595 fills a different purpose, though.

If you listen to music, play games, and watch movies all in equal measure, the HD595 are tailor-made for you. They've got a more angular soundstage and they have a more forward upper midrange. The treble of the HD595 and the HD580 are nearly identical. In fact, here's a pair of graphs to show you how similar they really are, frequency-wise:

I think, on the whole, the HD580 give a better musical experience, though.

Out of curiosity....where did you see the HD595 for $160? The best price I find so far is $217.

But they're not a reputable seller, and often deliver the wrong item. Then, you get to experience their complete lack (literal terms) of customer service!

Hi, yes I agree that you should be spending the $150 on something else at amazon.

How about 10 pairs of KSC-75 ($14/pair)?

About the HD580 and HD595. I actually like the HD595 quite better than the HD580. The HD595 are easier to drive, make music sounds closer and more intimate to you, and has some amazing vocals. What I liked about the HD580 was its more distant soundstage which is good for orchestra/classical. Still, the sound signature IMO is relatively similar.

For what I'm listening (Rock/Alternative) I am willing to pay about $50 more for the HD595 but definitely not $100.

I agree with Febs above. Either call HeadRoom, or you can even have them email you their price for the 595's. It is not quite $160 (and I could not find them on the CompUPlus website anyway) but when you add in the $15.00 for shipping that CompUPlus would add, etc. and the quality and reputation of HeadRoom and their generaous return policies, IMO the extra 15-20 bucks you might spend is very much worth it (of course, this could just be me rationalizing again...)

Do not get the HD 580s unless you are prepared to invest on a dedicated headamp! They´ve got 300 Ohm impedance.

Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I will be using the 580 or 595 headphones for Movie/TV viewing, gaming and music.

Would I be wrong assuming my receiver and my Klipsch 2.1 speaker system for the PC should have enough power to drive the 580's without needing an amp?

DEFINITELY get the HD 580. No contest at these prices. I would pick the 580 even if it cost the same as the 595. It sounds practically identical to the 600, which I bought to replace the 595. The sound quality of the 580/600 is better to my ears...much smoother overall. At best, the 595 and 580 sound so close that the $100 difference is simply not worth it.

The 580 will work quite well out of a receiver (although portables have a hard time powering them); you can also use some of the money you save to buy a decent MINT or Portaphile amp.

With all due respect, but IMHO the sound of the HD 580s is bloated and indistinct when powered by the average headphone jack, even when there´s enough power.
