So, I'm looking into getting my first good set of cans. While I'd like to get something like the HD650s, alas, they're out of my current price range. So for the moment, I'm looking at the HD580s and the HD570s. My question is, are the 580s that much better then the 570s? Enough to justify the $80 price jump? Are there any other options that I'm overlooking? I plan to use something along the lines of a little cMoy amp with whatever I buy. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Get the 580s and a CMOY... that is a GREAT start.

Never heard the 570s but im sure the 580s are better with an amp.

Hell yeah, the 580's are worth $80 more. The 570's aren't too good. I've had them and ditched them. Not much bass and the highs are kind of shrill IMHO.
I wouldn't bother with the 570's if I were you.

I dunno if a CMOY/Go-Vibe type amp would power the 580's very well though. Maybe someone who's tried can tell you. They'd be able to power the 570's ok though.

Yes they are. Very much so. I own both. Trust me. The 580s blow the 570s away.

Thank you Vedder323, Fishing, Piccolo Daimaou! That's great info. The reason I was thinking about going with a cMoy was that I could build it myself (and I was thinking I could modify it a bit to have the ablity to run from USB, but I'm still thinking about that one). Will the cMoy drive it correctly? and if not, what other options would I have in the same $20-$50 price range?

A Cmoy will drive the 580s loud enough but it is, after all, a cmoy. I don't know of anything else in that price range. I believe you'll be happy with the results, though.
But if you ever listen to a really high end amp your wallet is going suffer.
BTW, I agree with everyone else, don't even consider the 570s. They're not in the same product line with the 580/600/650. The 570s are generally considered to be more akin to the 590s. Leave the 570s alone, get the 580s and know that you have a truly world-class headphone.

Plan on wiring your Cmoy for 2 x 9V batteries or DC wall adapter power and it should drive the HD580 just fine. Eventually you'll likely want to upgrade to a better amp, but the cmoy can do a respectable job for now.

570 vs 580 without an amp, I dunno. Probably a slight edge to the 580s.
570 vs 580 with an amp, complete and utter domination by the 580s.

From someone who has tried the HD600 (very similar to HD580) and HD570 side-by-side: YES...EVEN WITHOUT AN AMP!

If you are interested in open circumaural, you should look into the AKG501, HD555/HD595, and some of the beyerdynamics (I don't know which models).

I think you would be satisfied with any of those headphones.

Personally I would select between the HD580 and AKG501...I'd probably take the HD580 because it has a little better bass.

I don't think you can properly drive the hd-580s with a cmoy. I think if you plan to use a cmoy, maybe you should head towards a lower impedence headphone such as a grado or Audio technica.

i used a cmoy with my 580s and i really liked how they sounded. the cmoy powered them fine. i made mine with 2 9v. i'm sure they'll be loud enough for you, unless you like them loud enough to damage your ears. i recently upgraded to a mg head otl, it does sound nice, but i wasn't blown away. i'm still using the stock tubes, but will some variant of the 5751 soon. anyway, i was very satisfied with the cmoy. the source is probably more important.
