are the hd590's a lot better than the hd570?

i want to be using these to be playing FPS games (counter strike) and wont be using an amp. i want to be able to pinpoint where the enemies are.

By far is an understatement.

I want you to know :-
------------------------

I just added a 256MB card to my PALM Tungsten E handheld and played a few mp3's using the Real One player. I plugged my HD-580 directly to the headphone out on the handheld with no amp in between...

I got awesome sound!!! Even better than my CD Player!!!

So if a palm handheld can drive the notoriously hard to drive HD580 then by all means the HD590 will be a breeze...

Im pretty sure you dont need an amp for the HD-590 although having a basic airhead from headroom will help with the spatialization and frequency response.

Its not the speakers that suck - its the sources...

The HD590's are much better bro than the HD570's. But dude, I must throw my recommendation to you that you look at some Sennheiser PX100's. They are easily driven and for $20-30 from ecost.com....might i say it is not worth buying HD590's. I mean if you want to go big, go big - HD580/600, high-line Grado, etc. But for what you spend on HD590's I just think there are better options for your ears.

I've got the 590's and really like them. I finally heard the 600's (WOW!) but unless you are willing to throw down a lot of cash on an amp the 600's/580's just aren't going to be that great. In an underpowered situation, the 590's beat out the 600's. The 590's btw are very very easy to drive, while the 570's are obnoxiously inefficient. For CS though, I'd recommend the 280 pro. It's a lot less money and positioning is spectacular and the isolation is wonderful because it blocks out all the fan noise and lets you carefully listen to your game. They're also great moive cans. If you do go with the 280 though, be aware that they take a lot of burn in to get really sweet and they're really uncomfortable for about 2 weeks.

HD590 will win hands down in just about everything, in comparison with HD280. The only thing that might be better, is that the HD280 is a closed headphone. Outside noise are not as likely to get in and disturb your gaming experience.

At something like a LAN party, this might be a problem. However, at a home environment, I very much doubt you will be bothered with very much background noise once the headphone is turned up.

Even at a lan, it's still up to debate. Do you want to keep the noise out, or do you want to coordinate with your teammates and hear the other guys when you take them out.

As far as positioning and soundstage goes, the 590. If it gets too loud though....I'd go with the audio-technica A900.

I totally agree with these suggestions. The HD590 is a all-round open can too. Sounds good for music, movies, and especially gaming. I drive mine easily with an old creative soundblaster card.
