Just wondering what would be better of the 2 (just found out about the 565's and though it could possibly be the better option for me).

This will hopefully be my first upgrade (from hp890's which have served me very well and have been great as an entry pair of 'phones

) what sort of improvements can i expect out of my upgrade depending on what one i choose to go for (will be unamped at first but i'm planning on getting a cmoy or something....)

You're in luck. I own the hp890 and I just got the Senn 595. I love both of these cans.

They are both comfortable and easy to drive (as long as you get the 50 ohm version). Actually the 50 ohm 595s will provide higher volume than the 32 ohm 890.

As far as sound quality goes, the 595 are definately better. They have a more refined sound. They are twice as good by any means but they are indeed better.

The sound stage is actually larger than the 890 but both are plenty big.

The 595 are certainly not bass heavy cans (as many have said). The 890 actually have a little more bass. The mids on the 595 are way better and more pronounced. The highs are a little better.

Hope that helps!

I wonder where you'd get a 565 other than on the second hand market? In any case I owned a 565 and currently own the 595, and the 595 wins hands down for neutrality and musicality (they're also more efficient, and I have the 120 ohm version). The 565 was the best of the old line in my opinion--yes, better than the 585 and 600, at least without an expensive HP amp--but the 595 is still superior. Go for it.

As for the 890, it's in a lower class altogether. I listened to mine for about 5 minutes before putting them on Ebay. Should've listened longer? Nope, no amount of burning in would have made that much difference.

Yes, the HD-565 Ovation was much more in line with the 580. In comparison to the HD-595, the 565 was more spacious in the sound, what I can remember.
