I love my Sony NW-HD1 (with Shure E4s), very musical and loveley SQ, I think all sony HD-players share the same sound signature.

I can't speak for the others, but I like the HD5's sound quality. If only I could find a new one in Canada... anyhow, it's nice and warm and feels very full. The only thing is that there's a background fuzz if you use certain earbuds/headphones.

Wrong, H120 has optical out. H320 does sound very nice though.

I haven't heard the other players, but I like the HD5's sound quality as well. (with shure e4) Its impossible to hear the buzz unless if the song is extremely quiet.

No, it's quite pronounced. If you take an MP3Gain'd song, in a section with just vocals, a guitar line, and a light drum backbeat, you can definitely hear it. The HD5 is a definite no-no if you like any sort of, say, Adult Contemporary, or Classical music.

If you want sound quality, then the x5 is the way to go. I researched, tried stuff out, and went with the 60gb x5. No doubt, it's for lovers on sound.

X5 and iRiver 120/140 are great portables. I even prefer my 120 over the X5!

I agree, but prefer the X5 over the H1xx if you are just using the head-out.

However, I sold my X5 because I liked my H140 better when using the optical out to a DAC/amp.

I am very happy with the sound of my A3000 - I was migrating from a SHARP IM-DR80 1bit auvi mdisc recorder - which sounded far better than it should have. The a3000 has been described as having a "consumery" sound (not unfounded) - but I like it, and it has a decent EQ.
