I've been using the 497s for a year + now, and so far it broke on me, twice.

I like the sound quality that the cans have been providing, but I'm wondering if its time to upgrade.

What's the next fessible budget upgrade.

What's the "budget"?

What's breaking on the 497 so we can take that into consideration for any other suggestions?

You want to upgrade with no extra cash? Tsk, tsk!

For the price range it's usually only the HD497 and SR60. I prefer the later, but it's more a difference than an overwhelming victory of one or the other.

However... if you want to go off the beaten path and become a member of Team RBISHE Yo!, there's the Sony MDR-CD780's, which at least a few of us think is better than either.

As for the break, its just that the left channel si totally gone.

The problem with the left channel may just be a loose connection between the cable and the transducer. Sennheiser (supposedly) uses a standard mini-plug for this connection, which can sometimes come loose. You may be able to simply push it back in. Everything about these cans is modular and easy to disassemble, so you could just pull off the earpads, open them up, and see if this is the problem.
