I ordered Sennheiser's HD428's on Black Friday, to use as winter ear muff's. I just got them (I'm in a very remote community in Northern Canada) and they were DOA - only the right side works. Sure, sending them back is an option.. if I want to see another set in 3 weeks + ~$50 shipping (They cost $50 in the first place). So I decided to take them apart and this is what I found:

It looks like the guy on the production line ran out of wire and didn't want to thread it through the headband again, so he added a little more and then the soldering iron melted through.

So a recable it is!
First order of business: How do I open the driver housing? Seal it again?
I've already got a cable to use. It looks to be 2-3x thicker and not as long, which is good.

EDIT: Upon further investigation, there was a little piece of tape neatly covering that hole in the driver: http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/7143/10009235387829.jpg
Discovering that, I have written a stern email to Sennheiser.
