I prefer the 650 to the 580/600. Reading through the posts saying that the bass is muddy, I get the feeling that there must be source/amp issues. I've NEVER found the 650 muddy.

IMHO the 650 is more refined from top to bottom. Plus I happen to think the 600's while having good bass, don't have enough. And I listen to most types of music from classical to metal.

I will say both 580/600 and 650's scale well. The better the source/amp the better the performance. No ceiling with either. With that kind of upside it merely becomes a matter of taste.

I did sell my 600's as I found myself not listening to them as the 650's more refined presentation simply made the 600's seem the lesser phone to me.

And don't listen to those who say the 650 has too much bass. The bass in no way dominates the rest of the spectrum. It's a relative thing having more to do with sound signature and personal preferences.

There are many highly thought of headphones out there with more bass than the 650's. It's a relative thing.

The HD650 vs the HD600

1) HD650 definately has more bass especially when you come from the HD600. You may even believe that the bass is too much
2) HD600 has more top end mainly because the bass is not as much on the HD650 in reality I think they have similar treble sound signature it's just it's more apparent on the HD600
3) For vocals and Classics I would probably like the HD600 more however I still find myself reaching for the HD650 than I do the HD600

Note I have the AKG701 so will now sell the HD600 that will leave me with the Grado RS1, Senn HE60, HD650, shure 500 as well to cover all the bases.

Which ever you decide to get make sure you get a good amp as unlike say the RS1 and in ears these do require good amplification to sound at best

HD-650 wins for me. I found the HD-600 to be grainy with uneven treble extension. I agree that the HD-650 sounds slow, and darker in stock form but they are much better after the cable upgrade. Also, the HD-650 has much more velvet midrange and deeper soundstage.

This thread proves that there is room in the marketplace for both of these models. At first, I thought the HD-650 was an upgraded HD-600, but this thread says otherwise.

It's good to see a few posts that get very specific about the different qualities. It's very helpful when a reader doesn't have the luxury of trying out both themselves.

I have been using the 650's for a couple of weeks now, and I'm thrilled with the sound. But I have not heard the 600 yet. When I have to give back the 650's to my friend, I might be inclined to try the 600 as they are available for $100 less and do seem to have some strong followers.
