I am deciding between a Razer Tiamat, and the HD 598 Headphones/set. I don't care about the mic at all in the Razer Tiamat, but I will be using both mainly for gaming. I care about positioning (where enemies are).
I know the HD 598 are way better than the Tiamats, but if I'm just going to be gaming will their soundstage be of any help for positioning?

Thanks!

What about the AKG Q701?

The HD558 will be your best value bet, it's the same driver as the HD598, with a simple mod you can do to make it sound even more like the latter.

For as close as it gets for the price, I know it's what I'd do. Just something to consider :).

What games do you play?

I play FPS', like tf2, that price difference doesn't really matter to me, since I d rather not mod, this is my first "audiophile" headphone.
By the way, is the impedance different between the two headphones?

The impedance won't help much in this case, I'm assuming it's 32 for the Razer, it's 50 for the HD5x8, and 62 for the Q701... but the Q701 has a much lower sensitivity so it needs lots of power to run actually. Also consider the AKG K7XX, it's a more warm Q701 sold through Massdrop.

many people (on his website) are saying that that modding it doesn't make it sound the same as the 598's

Most of those people basically say the difference is the HD598 is a little brighter, and maybe a little clearer.

If you're just gaming, I'd probably save $50-$100 and get a Superlux 668b/Samson 850.  Even for music, they might win in a faceoff, which would depend on what sound presentation you prefer.
