HD 555 As An Upgrade To HD 201?

HD201 is a nice closed can for the price. Probably the best in the $20 pricerange at least.  The HD238 is a good open portable model but the bass is definately out of control.  The HD555 is ok for around $70 but for around $100 something like the AD700, MS-1, or DT440 would be better. If you want to look into closed the Shure SRH440 is great for $100 as well.

Well I'm buying a slightly used HD 555 and (again slighty used) Grado sr60 for 120 dollars. Couldn't choose one of them so I decided to try them both. A friend of mine is selling 75$ each, and agreed to make a discount of 30$ if I buy both. I am curious about the soundstage and comfort of Hd 555, on the other hand I've read hundreds of comments regarding how sr60 gets on with metal / rock music.

I will only listen to music and some people say they wouldn't get a HD 555 for listening to music. Therefore I decided to think twice. But since I believe its a matter of personal taste, I will try them out anyway.

The HD 555s are good headphones, and pretty comfy for a non-top end can (dare I say comfier than some top end cans anyway). For $60 you can't really go wrong at all.

For that kind of budget, around 75$? a used HD555 or AD700 are the way to go, neither are portable.

For that budget, the only other full size I would recommend would be the much more fun sennheiser Hd485 that is now discontinued, but it much much much more fun than both.  The downside is they are now rare and hard to come by.

Coming from a hd 201 myself, i was wondering if the AD700 was comfortable.

I remember having a pair of headphone very uncomfortable for me because i wear glasses, and it would hurt the top of my ear where the branch sits.
i know the hd555 goes around the ear like the hd201, but does the AD700 too? if not is the ad700 tight or loose? I can wear the hd201 all day every day without problems. Also i have a big head.

i initially wanted to get a sony mdr v6, but the availability is a problem

Sorry, but I really just have to brag right now (again I apologize), but I just got a pair of Sennheiser HD555's off Amazon for $41.37 (including shipping+handling). The seller said they are Like New, so I'm pretty excited right now!
