So,
 
I am looking for a great sounding pair of earbuds for less than $1000 US.
 
My issue is this...I need something small and ultraportable like an in-ear bud/monitor for travel purposes, BUT I absolutely can't wear anything that inserts into the ear canal - my ear canals hurt like hell within 10 minutes of inserting something. I've tried several of the high end Shure's with different tips, etc and I just can't do it.
 
So what I am looking for is the absolutely best sounding pair of in earbuds that rest in your ears but don't press into the canal (similar to the Apple earbuds that kind of hang inside your earlobe). I will be listening mostly with my iPhone.
 
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...FYI I want to avoid any type of headphone if at all possible.
