I just bought a pair of Shure e500s. I'm not convinced they're my cup of tea just yet, although they are better than my UM2s. I have noticed that the two ear pieces are wired completely independently. Has anyone done the obvious (although insane in this case) and set them up for balanced drive?

You can also get a xlr to 1/8 or 1/4 plug adapter so portable isnt a problem

i would look for "more your cup of tea" than recabling them.

there are a couple VERY nice portable balanced amps though. sadly they were designed before balanced amps were in vogue, and only a small fistful of boards were printed, so nobody knows what they are...

get two Cmoy boards, config one as inverting and one as non-inverting, set the gain to be the same (which could be tricky since there is that +1 factor with the non-inverting gain).

Then you get a push/pull amp that accepts normal non-balanced inputs, just right for your IEM's....
