Quoth wikipedia:
The first Compact Disc for commercial release rolled off the assembly line on August 17, 1982, at a Philips factory in Langenhagen, near Hanover, Germany. The first title released was ABBA's The Visitors (1981).

That's not true.

The first 50 CD titles were released on October 1, 1982 by CBS/Sony in Japan. Billy Joel's "52nd Street" (catalog number 35DP-1) is often referred to as the first CD released, although there are other titles released that day with "1" in their catalog number.

I have Earth Wind & Fire's "Raise" (catalog number 35DP-15) coming in the mail. Otherwise, I have Seiko Matsuda's "Pineapple" (catalog number 35DH-3) and Momoe Yamaguchi's "Again" (catalog number 35DH-5). All released on October 1, 1982.

ABBA's "The Visitors" was just the first pop CD produced at PolyGram's CD plant in 1982.

I think I got my first CD in December 1986. However, my first CD player didn't come until April 1987.

Third, back then my local Tower Records only had a small section in their store for cds. The rest (about 95%) of the retail space were filled with vinyl LPs and cassettes. My first cd purchase was Ratt - Invasion of Your Privacy.

I did not begin to buy CD's until 1990 or 1991. Only after my wife left me and the TV was not on constantly, did I even bother with an audio system much. I still have only once heard the medium best LP.

It's been a long, interesting road. I bought my first CD player - an Onkyo - in either late 1983 or early 1984. My first CD's were compilations, Best of David Bowie and Best of Roxy Music.

Since then, probably 20-25 players or DAC's, and it has to be over 3,000 CD's.....

I bought my first player in late 1984 with a batch of 10 CDs I had the option of a Meridian or a Marantz, I bought the Marantz and used the UKP100 I saved to buy my first 10 CDs back min those days they were really expensive (relatively speaking) .

Happy Birthday CD - many more..
