Any suggestions on a great recording of this piece? With the holidays coming up I would like a different copy than the one I already have.

Thanks in advance.

I have two versions. Gabrieli Consort on Archiv is stunning. The Naxos budget recording with the Scholar's Baroque group is also top-notch in terms of recording quality, but maybe not as passionate as Gabrieli. The Scholars version is still unique enough from the standard interpretation to merit a listen. It's a tough call for me which is the better of the two.

I am not a big Messiah fan, but if I was to get a new version for myself I would get one of the newer "period" performances that are highly rated like:

Pinnock/Archiv

Hempcamp mentions a newer version McCreesh/Archiv which I would probably also like very much.........lots of high energy.

Also to get started cheaply the Naxos set is very good as mentioned above.
