Went to my local shop today and had a short listening session with Denon D1000 today. I am mainly interested in D2000 but it turned out that they will only stock D1000, D2000 will be available on special order only.

I had sort of expected a sound signature similar to what I have read about D2000/5000, i.e. a bass that is uncommon for headphones.

Well, D1000 did not strike me as having a bass that was out of the ordinary. I can't say that I detected anything that struck me as being very special about these cans. Which might be a good thing IMO. Pretty neutral I would say from my short session with them.

I should say that the rig was unfamiliar to me (NAD CD player as source and the phones connected to the headphone output of a cheap NAD amplifier) and I did not have the time to compare to any other headphone. From memory though, my ATH ES7 have much more bass (admittedly with some loss of definition). D1000 is probably more neutral though this is more of a guess on my behalf.

Has anyone listened to both D1000 and D2000/D5000 and can comment on the bass, I am looking for a closed can with more impact than what the D1000 had?

I made a quick comparison between the D1000 and the D5000. The D1000 keeps the signature sound of the D5000 being this detailed, sweet mids and crisp highs without being ear piercing. The main differences are the amount of bass where the D1000 has less presence and the smaller soundstage presentation. Other than that they are close.

I actually think the D1000 is close to the sound of the HD650 but without the airiness provided by an open air design.

I was able to get the D1000 for $123 delivered from one of the pricegrabber.com store fronts. In my opinion these are the best $100-$150 price range headphones I have ever heard.

I would say you can get about 75% to 80% of the D5000 sound paying less of 25% of their cost….. not a bad deal.

Thank's musicman59,

Seems like D2000 is for me then

, with some recordings I would like more impact than what the D1000 had. I have to agree though, D1000 is excellent value at it's price point. I am slightly tempted to get one. As it's smaller and more portable than D2000 I think I can convince myself that I need both

Go for them! That's what I did. The D5000 for home and serious listening and the D1000 for fun and portable rig.
