an anecdote for the tom waits afficionados:

two days ago i heard one of his recent songs on a friend's car radio. (i've always admired waits' razor voice but until recently didn't much care for his brand of laidback roots music. exposure to a lot of alt.country and americana has changed that.) right after the waits track a similar song emerged from the radio, yet after waits that voice seemed so mellow, pleasing, well-modulated, gentle.

Ah, I totally forgot:

Peter Steele of Type O Negative. A goth-rock/doom metal band, he has very unique throaty voice. Though he uses some effects to enhance it, its still very unique. Not fan of their music generally, except song Haunted and Love You To Death which are one of my fav songs ever.

Actually, my wife got me that remix EP that came out a while back, and it's been a frequent occupant of my car's CD player. It's brought something I've neglected to my attention.

Why not? I think Amy Lee carries her voice really well, she can be operatic and can be strong and gruffy (for a girl) without sounding forced. She may not be the greatest per se but she sure has a dynamic voice.

because in terms of female rock (metal) singers there are so many better ones out there, and bands have been doing what evanesance have for a looong time. (harsh rock contrasted by a sweet sounding female voice) The fact that evanesance is the only one to receive MTV status and top 40 play really pisses me off. Evanesance's music is one dimensional and gets old after a few songs, and I catagorize her to the likes of linkin park. Her band sucks and heavily relies on her vocals to carry their music. Compared to say..the distillers which is a female lead rock band done right. Personally I think her voice is above average at best, and to compare her work to the likes of Queen? well I don't think I need to share my opinion on that..
