+1 for John Entwistle. Incidentally, he may have been regarded as the most accomplished musician in the band, but when asked to describe John's playing, Roger Daltry replied LOUD".
I did a quick search, and found no mention of Norman Watt-Roy of The Blockheads. Seen close up, his playing on Rhythm Stick is mesmerising.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VB00GTgyxMk&feature=related
I always had a soft spot for Mark King of Level 42 too. Saw them recently and he’s quicker than ever. Other electric bass players who deserve a mention are Aston “Familyman” Barret, of The Wailers and my bass playing hero and all round diamond geezer, Jah Wobble Dig the groove man.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIztO3YrB_k
As for upright virtuosos, +1 for Christian McBride. (check out Fingerpainting: The Music of Herbie Hancock recorded with Mark Whitfield, Nicholas Payton). Also, I feel I ought to mention Danny Thomson, long time sidekick of the late John Martyn, who also played in the folk fusion band Pentangle, many years ago. A guy I saw play a solo on Jools Holland one time is Jake Erwin of Hot Club of Cowtown. Cracking upright slap bass.

No list of greatest bassist is complete without Garry Karr. Simply a master.

Great feel and emotion with Bill Evans and can hold it down

I've mostly had exposure to Gomez through Chick Corea's recordings but the video above is another testament to his glorious playing.

EG also authored a pretty good book for bass players, I used to have it on my music stand...
