This guy, thePhantom* (Kemet Coleman) is a really awesome guy and deserves to have his music recognized. It's not the kind of gangster type rap you think of, but neo conscious hip hop that really, truly is great music. He has some free stuff as well. His new album "The Fountain of Youth" releases July 12th, and every "Phriday" he is releasing a single until his album release. Give some of his music a listen and help him get his (and my) city on the map!:

yeah i guess not all of it is neo conscious. and he has a few more singles out as well. He is doing a thing called Phantom Phridays where he is releasing a new single every Friday until his new album drops (July 12th). It's called The Fountain of Youth. The Phantom Phriday singles are being released on his Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/thePhantom/19378852537 and his twitter (@thephantom816). His other single Deep Down is on iTunes here: (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/deep-down-feat-melissa-backstrom/id431140747). P.S. The Phantom  Phriday releases are in 320kbps MP3 but still pretty high quality.

one of my favorite genres, you would be surprised how much of this neo conscious hip hop is about, particularly in japan. never heard anything quite like this guy though. If you like that kind of thing then go check out BOB42jh on youtube. He gets permission from small hip hop producers to post a wide variety of stuff on his channel and it works like a try before you buy system for listeners, and free advertising for the folks making the music. some really beautiful stuff on there. Sure youtube SQ is pretty bad, but its a great way to find new stuff.

some things to have a look at. let me know what you all think ^_^

this one was a fair well song from shing02 to NUJABES, a very influential producer who died last year. http://www.youtube.com/user/surruk?feature=mhee#p/f/16/1nS3poI1ARo

what does neo even mean. are the lyrics only semi conscious?

Neo generally means new. for example "Neo Tokyo" in the film akira, a new city that was built upon the ruins of tokyo after world war 3. or in this case neo conscious hip hop, meaning a new genre of hip hop where MCs talk about more than just women, money, sex and violence.

but conscious hip hop has been around for while. not talking about women, money, sex and violence doesnt make you conscious, just alternative in a genre where the majority of rappers do. i wouldnt call nujabes and japanese jazz hip hop conscious, but its definitely different. i mean the season's end album which was released a few months ago had lyrics which for the majority of time talked about women, although not in a misogynistic way.

thePhantom* describes neo conscious as a "next level of consciousness" unlike what has been done before. He likes to think of his style akin to Lupe Fiasco.

Here's where he posts the Phantom Phriday releases BTW:

Did you even LISTEN to Destroy and Rebuild (album)?! Listen to the tracks Step Child, From the Ashes, and The Omega from that and see if you still say that.

to be honest this guy sounds like many mainstream rappers out there. he doesn't have any qualities, be they lyrics or production, which makes him stand out. the production on his tracks is massively manufactured and unoriginal.
no doubt he has some good tracks though, and not to be hater, but i dont think he's anything exceptional.
having said all of that, i will check out the album when it drops.
