Grado...where to stop?

I think GS-1000 is both excellent in base and mid-range. you should go for it if you like Grados.

Or else, Senn has a nice presentation, a little laid-back, but a very lush sound.

happy hunting

Heh, I'd say it's got bad bass and even worse midrange.

I think the best way to stop with grados is getting any one that you think is worth its money. (EG, sr80, sr225, HF-2,...) and buy every type of pad you can put it with (bowls, jumbos, flats, hd pads). That way you can have a taste of all grados. I myself believe the differences are quite small as to keep paying a prime. Wish I had known this before...

And damn, jumbo's are so damn expensive...

What Denons in particular are good?

D7000... because I am selling a pair...?

But seriously, they are really good (much better than D2000/5000 IMO).

Let me doubt that. If you search a bit you can find that the D2000 is the best for the money, as there are very little differences between d2k, d5k, and d7k, being the latter a luxurious product rather than a "better" one.

I see. But I have owned both D2000 and D7000. Tried D5000 at the meet. I thought they are all very different. If you are referring to modded D2000, I don't know what to say because I never tried them. However, if you think stock D2000 are very similar to D7000... then I would strongly disagree. I assume you had them?

They're all good, it's just a matter of how much detail you want. The 2000 is really close in price to the 5000, so the 5k may be the best bang for the buck.

I've had lots of Grado's in the past, and I've sold all except the SR60 after I bought Denon. GS1ki included.

The SR225/i's are a very punchy, lively, and fun headphone. I find them to have just enough bass, as any more could overpower the other frequencies. They are also easy to drive with an iPod. You can find them for sale in the FS/FT forums for around $140 USD, and at that price, they are worth every penny (IMO).

Forget the other lower Grado series and start with the SR225. If you like that jump over the last of the Prestige series and go for the RS2, and if you can truly afford it, the RS1. One nice thing about upper end Grados is their darn good resale value.

I would say go with the 60s. They are a great representation of the grado sound for very cheap. If you like the sound signature, then upgrade to whatever you want (MS-2 is my personal price/performance favorite)

I'm listening to a pair of ALO recabled HFI-780s and they are bass heavy for when I want that sound...don't know how they sound without the recable...bought them off the FS Forum and I like it for a contrast. Just an idea...don't know if you're interested in a closed phone, though.

Bingo. HF-1/HF-2's sound like Alessandros, and in my opinion, much better than the regular prestige phones.
