i thought that grados sound like they do partly due to their design (fact they're open). maybe there is really no true closed alternative...

No problem, there were a lot of adjectives in that sentence.

So what is the general consensus on the pxc 150, 250, and 300?

Would these factor into any discussion?

Also, has anyone tried the b&o a8?

Closed cans that sound similar to Grados... hmm, I'd look at what Philips has to offer (e.g. HP830). Other than that, you're more likely to get PortaPro-like or yet bass heavier stuff. K81DJ (maybe K26P, though bigger cans tend to give better isolation and the K26P is just about as good as it gets in this size), HP460, HD205 or HD212 Pro (ordered by manufacturer), these are the ones I'd take a look at then.

Eggos do sound rather close to Grados, although a little less controlled, but they don't isolate. They're designed not to leak but also not to isolate, so you can hear the outside but the outside can't hear you. So not ideal for your situation.

Have you thought about EQing your Etys? I have significant bass boost on my ER4s, it makes me love them much more.

Here's another vote for the HD 25-1 with the HD 580 cable, similar to my SR 225 without the leakage. Ya gotta hear Clapton on these cans, my favorite portable.

Try the K81DJ. They compare to my HF-1 w/ Flats, but are obviously sealed.

The HD25-1 and ATH-ES7 are both good-sounding closed, portable headphones.

Definitely not the B&O A8. I think it sounds worse than the ATH-EC7, ATH-EC700 and ATH-EC700Ti, and even these don't sound very good.
