I was searching for some images of RS-1, and found three types of them...

Older version that has no Serial Number - Dark Mahogany wood

Earlier Serial number - dark mahogany

Later serial number - lighter colored Mahogany

Now I was wondering...do they have different sound signature among them?

Oh, and do they share same drivers?

I don't really know anything about wood, but I'd guess it could be differences in the wood stain color and not the wood itself.

I definitely prefer the looks of the dark colored ones.

I think differences in the wood would have quite a minimal effect on the RS-1. I think more likely the difference in sound that some describe is due to fact that the headphones are handmade on a very small production scale.

There are those among us that believe the older RS1 sounds slightly different than the newer RS1... the newer being slightly tweaked for bowls. John won't say for sure, but he's said changes can certainly happen in a product that has been made for 10 years.

As for the wood, the reason it changed color was mostly to do with stock. The first RS1 I had (about 8 months ago) was much lighter in color than the pair I have now (a more recent pair).
