I'd just like to clarify a few things I learned searching through other threads. First of all, all the newer grados have no buttons right? And the change is purely cosmetic, just the button off and no other changes? And if I were to purchase a used grado in the prestige line, how do I identify which grado I have? Is there anything obvious to look for on the outside? Generally, the price for repairs seems to be $40 plus shipping. Can anyone confirm that price, and is that for all repairs or something simple like a loose cable?

i think that just the rs series got a makeover

if you were to get an sr grado used, buttonless
then look at the grills

if its a black grill with circles and 1/8" termination, its either an sr60 or 80
sr60 stock comes with comfy pads while the sr80 comes with bowls
i guess it'd be hard to tell the difference

the sr125 look like the sr60 and 80, but is terminated with a 1/4" jack.

sr225 has silver grills that look real neat also terminated with 1/4"

and of course, the sr325i are bit, metal, and bronze colored with a leather handband and 1/4" termination

If it's an old SR225 then it will have black grills. It is much bassier than the current silver grill SR225. Both sound great though.

I had the silver-grill SR-225's and thought the bass was indeed lacking. Not so with my RS-2's which gives just the right amount of quality bass.

Okay, wait wait wait. I'm about to FINALLY buy some Grados and I have a few questions.

1) First, what are the 'buttons' you're talking about in the posts above?
2) What is the difference between Grado SR60s and Grado Prestige Series SR60s?
3) What exactly are the differences between the SR60s and the Allesandro MS1s?
4) What are the main differences between the 60s and 80s? Bass?
5) Bowls? Cups? Wha?

1. The buttons are a little circle in the middle of the grills with the model number on them.

2. They are one and the same.

3. Different voicing. Someone else who knows more on the allesandro series should chime in here.

4. The 80's have a better cable (not 100% sure here) and better bass. This is because of the bowls I believe.

5. Bowls are the types of pads on grado's sr80 and up. They look like a bowl, the wide (open) side goes on your ear.

You won't save any money. $60 for the SR60 + $20 for bowls + shipping charges for both > $80 for SR80.

Absolutely. That's what I did. Last summer (2007), I bought the bowl pads from Todd The Vinyl Junkie (Grado Bowl Pads - $15.00 : TTVJ, Todd The Vinyl Junkie) for $15 (same price currently), and used the "$10 introductory savings on your first purchase at TTVJ" (To use the Discount Coupon, enter the Redemption Code code during checkout: NewTTVJ1). I assume it's still available but you'll have to check.

So now I've got, in effect, SR80's, and although I'll soon be getting the 225's (yes...I've been bitten), it did save me some real money.

O_O I was under the impression the bowl pads were too big for the SR60's.

Hmm I wonder if I should have got those instead of buying some HD414 pads. :\

80's new are around $95 without discount, with discount $85 so they probably go for between 50 and 70 used. sr 60 probably 35-50 used.

Rough estimates (and obviously dependent on condition):

SR60s: $50-65
SR80s: $70-85

Check eBay and the For Sale forums. I do regularly, since I'll be selling my 60s as soon as my 225s arrive.

Nope. The 60s and 80s are the same headphones construction-wise. They fit like a charm and, as I said, essentially turn the 60s into 80s.
