I just got my new SR80's in the mail and they sound ok. The earpads are small compared to other headphones I've owned. So how much smaller are the flat pads? Will my ears touch the speaker? And is it possible to just cut the bowls pads in half to make them a little flat-er?

The flat pads are similar in size, only, well, flatter. Your ears will not touch the driver, unless you are wearing them wrong.

I suggest rather than risking your current pads, go the route of buying some HD414 pads (they're like $5 + shipping) and modding them as discussed elsewhere in this forum. I have both, and the yellow 414 pads are strange looking, but in my opinion even more comfortable than flats because they are softer.

If you want to dye them black you can with standard Rit dye. Just clean them well after they dry so the dye doesn't wear off.
