Or if you can't decide, there's also the Alessandro MS1

+1

...I haven't tried the Grado sound signature, but I'll be buying the Alessandro MS-1i (new edition) soon in lieu of any of the Grado SR60-125s.

I've read that the SR60i actually sounds better with an iPod than the 80 or 125; how about the MS-1. On an iPod is that still the best choice?

Also, all of these headphones are pretty old, how come they are still the best choices?

Just because they're old doesn't make them any less good.

As for amping, my MS1 sounds brilliant straight outta my iPhone/iPod.

i've heard there's not much difference between 80 and 125. i do think there is a difference between the 60 and 80...i did own both almost a year ago; unfortunately i don't quite remember the sound signature, except that they did both sound excellent (were my first head-fi purchases), but i do remember that i enjoyed the 80's more than the 60's.

I've compared all three. They were plugged into the headphone jack of a CD player when I auditioned them. The differences between them were incremental to my ears. There seemed to be a little more refinement in the sound signature as you moved up the series but this was subtle rather than marked. Why look any further than the SR60 for use with an ipod?

The 60 doesnt sound better than 80 and 125, thats just plain stupid. Sure you can say that buying the 80 is a waste of money, but its definitely not better than the 125 which doesnt have that nails on a blackboard sound.

I think he doesn't like the SR80's.

But the MS1's are perfect. Don't worry, they sound great on an iPod.
