If you really don't want to get him SR60's(read: get him hooked on hifi) then try the KSC75's or the PX100's

Grados synnergize very well with discman players IMHO. Same goes with KSC75s. The discman players I have heard, D335, D35, D223 are very neutral and open / spatious sounding. Works very well with the Grado / Koss house sound.

Garrett

What he said. There was a practically brand new pair on the FS forum for $55 including shipping the other day. I paid $55 for a fairly old pair and am still quite happy with that purchase. Great sound, low price - what more could you ask for?

SR60 is not a portable can, sure its fine to actually where while out and about, but you'll piss off many because they can easily hear the music.

KSC75 and pocket the rest.

hi ken,
you should really consider the $59 beyer dt231. they work great unamped, are light and low profile, and semi-closed (won't leak sound). they are astonishingly good headphones for the price.

Hi redshifter,

Those do sound like they would almost be perfect. However, they are a bit ugly. Perhaps if they were black. But grey and all plastic? Don't get me wrong. I don't care about looks that much on my own headphones, but as a gift, I would want someone to look at it and say wow just by looking at it, rather than "Uhhhh..." in their mind. You know?

Thanks for the reference, though.
