Hi all.   I currently own some Denon d-2000's - theyre great.. but...there's always better.  though these cans do seem to be a bit of a plateu in their price range..

I am wondering what you all feel is a solid upgrade from these.  Obviously Beyer t1, or hd800 and the other "top tier" cans are better, but what about something that isnt such a price jump yet clearly delivers better sound?

im going to keep my sound preferences vague for now just to see what everyone recommends.  Open or closed is not a preference, but definitely NOT IEM's.

thanks everybody

I'm also interested in this. I have a D2000 and will be considering an upgrade sometime in the future.

I would probably get the Beyer DT 990 600 ohm from B&H as it's $229.

Or I would look at the K702 from AKG.

Anything above the DT 990 600 ohm would be the HD 800, or t1 but like you said, you don't want to break the bank.

Here's another idea -- send your D2000s off to Lawton Audio for some modifications.  In my experience, the markl mods and the wooden ear cups make a huge difference (improvement) for the D2000s, tightening up the bass and bringing the mids forward.

Plus, you can basically spend as much as you want -- from just a basic markl mod (~$150), to the mod with a pair of wooden ear cups (~$350), to converting them to a pair of LA2000 Lites (~$500), or taking them all the way to a pair of LA2000s (~$900).

im still considering the ever elusive he5/ef5

i almost went for the he5le/ef5 but its too expensive right now, and if i get he5/ef5  used its at least reasonable...

you really think the dt990 or k702 are UPGRADES? or just "side-grades"
i dont know im just asking your opinion... they seem to be in the same class as the d2000

really the only headphones i can think of that fit the bill so far are the he5/le   not counting possible d2000 upgrades
maybe the w5000, but ive never heard those.. and have no idea if they are "better" than d2000

What about some HD650s?  The used ones aren't priced too bad.
I am pretty biased towards Sennheisers, though.

again.. sounds more like an equivalent than a upgrade...   I too am a sennheiser fan... they've never let me down.   maybe i could trade someone for a pair of those..

If I were in your shoes I'd look into some Audio Technicas, either the AD2000 (open, because it's supposedly fast) or the closed A2000X or W1000X (depending on your bass preferences). Alternatively, I would play with the whole ortho craze and see what that's all about. I haven't actually had any experience with either, but hopefully they're useful ideas.
