I'm working on a balanced opamp project. Since both channels are 100% isolated, I'd like to keep it that way, and use individual volume controls for each channel. Course, this can be a pain in the ass to get "right" so I'm assuming using stepped attenuators would make it easier, since you can count the notches to even the channels out.

Problem is, what is a good stepped attenuator that has an easy feel / movement to it? The ones that I've seen are really hard to turn, like rotary switches. I know there are ones intended just for audio, but what am I looking for?

Thanks.

Hi,

There isn't any with smooth feel. All the stepped attenuators use rotary switches and generally these switches are designed to "lock" at each position, thus, the notches. The convenience of notches that you mention is, in fact, a side effect.

If you prefer, you can take apart the rotary switch and remove the spring and the metal ball that does this. I found this quite effective. (But I put them back in because I like notches.)
