The Sony D515 reportedly has one of the Best Lineouts period. Keep you eyes out for one, but you have to be sharp. It's a highly prized item and wouldn't go for cheap. Look at Duncan's review of different PCDPs through the eras and you'll get a rough idea of which cd players are gems.

Optical or line? They are different. Optical, well, all of the CD players capable of optical should be the same. Line, well, none of the current units is probably the word.

The optical out bypasses the DAC.

My basic understanding of Optical is it's just the digital data as read off the CD, but I don't know for certain.

Yes, it bypasses the DAC.

besides the obvious read offset that each cd player's digital optical outputted music would have, yes, all should be the same.

I rarely use my D955 for recording to MD, I either use my D555 of CX8 System.
