thanks for the feedback so far guys.

Btw I came across the hd200 master. Is that good?

I essentially want to use my headphones for music (rock, pop, classical) coupled with ocassional game and tv usage.

As this is a closed version of the awful HD500, I rather doubt it.
I'll add the HD485 to the list, or maybe the HD465 if this is substantially cheaper. The former apparently beats the HD497 in sonics, is large enough to be circumaural and pretty comfy, too. There aren't a whole lot of other open circumaural cans in this price range - the Philips HP8xx cans are fairly attractive over here, but not really available in the US.

Well I am from India and the Philips series is available here. Unfortunately sennheisers arent available here. I was planning on picking them up either from Norway,Sweden or Denmark when my mom visits next week.

How does the sound of the Philips hp800 and hp840 stack up to the others mentioned in this thread?

Here are some good ones...audio technica A500 for around 80 used, sony v6, senn hd280, akg k240s, grado sr60s, alessandro ms1s for around 80 used, but 100 new. Out of all on the list, ill go with the ms1s, great balance over the spectrum and fun cans to listen to.

HP800s seem to be quite OK for the price, but supposed to be creaky. HP840s appear to be fairly bright and a bit lacking in bass according to what I found here. HP890s used to be FOTM here a while back, not without reason. Not much is known about the still fairly new HP830s, but only a few hours ago there was a thread on the HP820 (fairly positive, too). Ah, the HP800 apparently is the same as the HP820 minus a more comfy headband. But note that these are far from $80 cans. Philips cans are apparently cheapest in southeast Asia.
When picking up Senns in Europe, the HD280 definitely is out of the budget, along with the K240 of whatever favor (even the K240M is >80€, the K240S >100€). (Grados also are fairly expensive, and many Koss cans are overpriced. KSC-75 and PortaPro pricing is OK, but you can pick those up everywhere.) PX100, HD497, HD465, maybe HD485 (provided you can find the latter two), these might fit. If you're good you can find HD570s for <60€ here in .de, so these might be another option. (HP890s and HD515s are a bit more expensive, but not dramatically so.)
