I'm particularily interested in headphones for trance. I've been looking at the Sennheiser HD 25-1's because they're not huge and they're easily driven by an mp3 player, but I heard they're only OK for electronica. So I'm wondering if there are any hp's anyone can recommend that'd sound good for electronica preferrably in the $100-200 range but maybe up to $300 if it's possible to find them used for a decent price. Oh but an important thing is that I won't use an amp because I'd usually use for portable listening and I don't want to pay any extra cash.

Anyone think the HD 25-1's are actually better than I've heard? I still think I might get them anyways.

I've found Beyerdynamic cans (DT880, DT531, DT770) to be good for trance. My favorite was the DT880, it had lots of detail and slighly recessed bass (I feel that trance artists up the bass too much in the mix) but very tight and punchy as well. Get the DT770 if you want lots of bass, and (if you can find them) the 531 is kind of in between the two.

Edit: it would be helpful to note that I typically prefer cans with decent soundstage and detailed, possibly hyped treble. Forward cans (like the HD25) really don't have the soundstage that other cans do.

Edit2: Crap. Portable. No amp. Scratch ALL my recommendations.

Canalphones may be okay but I really like cans a lot. Even if it were a bit bigger than the HD 25 I wouldn't mind too much. BTW I'd (hopefully) be getting the HD 25's for less than I can sell them for, so I'm not too worried about returns.

That's very surprising to me because you can get them new online for $170 shipped...

I always found that odd as well. People on ebay aren't always the brightest bunch...

Ah, Cyllic, you were referring to the auction that just ended for the HD-25-1. When I checked it this morning it was still at $75. A pair of Hd-25 just sold a week ago for $110 on ebay, so I was it's just a matter of luck and timing.

PX100s or SR60, the SR60s have more highs.

I'd say the HD25-1's would work well (with the limitations mentioned earlier). However, trying out both the HD25-1 and the Sony MDR-V700DJ's with Chicane (I'm not a huge Trance fan and it's the only Trance-like music I can locate on the server) and I'd say that the Sonys would work too, although they aren't what you could call 'agile' or 'sharp'. The Ultrasone HFI-650 is another option, and maybe the best if the HD25-1 is not your taste.

The A900's are NOT rugged. PX100/SR60 are wide open, which is OK for home and non noisy use, but for commutes you can forget it.

I'm listening to electronica (DJ Shadow) through my HD25's right now! The sound is stunning! Better than the Sony MDR V700DJ's by far! More agile, more detail...
