Good, dry-sounding amp for the AKG K240S?

I'm thinking that after I get my DT531 setup complete I'll want a (cheaper) setup to go with a set of K240s. I don't think a PPX3 will be an ideal matchup with the K240S (the K240S already has recessed trebles and a pronounced midrange, and I've read the PPX3 has similar qualities). I'm thinking a maximum of $300 for an amp (enough for a Gilmore Lite), although that's really more than I'd want to spend; I'd much rather have something in the pricerange of a Pimeta/Vibe. This does not necessarily need to be a home-based amp, as I have no trouble looking stupid in public with the K240S as a semi-portable headphone. Qualities I'd like the amp to have: somewhat lessened or very controlled bass; dry or very slightly recessed midrange, extended and pronounced (possibly somewhat bright) highs.

The Gilmore Lite has a very unrecessed midrange, but not smooth like tubes, more like a bit forward. For a generally dry sound, try a basic PPA. That's about all I can add. You might have to look a while to get a non-DIY amp in your price range.

ReDVsion: I'd recommend to go the PortaCordaII route - I like it very much with the K240S.

The PCII has crossfeed, right? Might be a good option for me, then. Anyone got experiences with a Vibe/Pimeta and the K240S?

If you go with an opamp based amplifier (such as Pimeta or something) then I recommend AD825 opamps or AD8610 opamps with K240S. Other opamps I've tried with it that I didn't like so well were OPA627, OPA637, OPA2132. AD823 was ok too. Although I didn't have my Corda HA-1 and K240S at the same time, I think the LM6171 opamp (in the Corda products) would work well too. It is a very detailed, neutral opamp. My personal favorite with K240S was AD825. Don't rule out tubes completely though. I like my Pete Millet hybrid tube amp the best of all with K240S.

Yes, it does - and yes, I think it would be.

I use a headsave classic with my K240S. I haven't rolled the opamps, but IMHO the 627s sound great with it. Bear in mind that the classic is an unbuffered design, so perhaps that helps liven up the 627s- thats my guess anyway.

I've got a Go-Vibe and a Classic with K240S. I've rolled opamps (the stock OPA2227, AD8620 and AD823). The stock OPA2227 sounds very fine with the K240S. I did not think that the AD8620 was worth the effort rolling it. I DID think that, specifically with the K240S, the AD823 is synergistic in the Go-Vibe.

The OPA2227 sounds better the more voltage it is run at. I've spent some time with a Classic (24v power supply) with OPA2227, AD8620 and OPA627's. The OPA2227 gives a sound that is especially open, deep and translucent. The OPA627's in a Classic with 24v power supply sound even better, imo, (more open, deeper, more translucent sound, richer, more detailed, more coherent soundstage), for a price. The price is worth it to me, Your Budget May Vary.

But both Go-Vibe and Classic are really good-sounding amps for the AKG K240S. For the Go-Vibe, consider getting the AD823 - it is especially good, specifically for the K240S. If you'll be using the Go-Vibe with other phones too (such as earbuds, canalphones, etc.) then I'd stick with the stock OPA2227.
