I'm a student who needs to bring speakers to school by airplane so I can't bring anything with a subwoofer.  So what is a good compromise that I can get good speakers with good bass that can get decently loud (music for one bedroom apartment with few friends over) without sacrificing space + weight?  I don't really wanna spend too much on these but maybe $200 to $300 max.

These will mostly be used for music + movies.

It's hard to pack anything good into a suitcase that won't push you over luggage weight limits. Ipod speaker docks are a decent option for size/cost/etc. Can you not buy something when you're out there?

unfortunately no, its a small island country.  Yeah I'm not saying they need to be like tiny... but I wasn't exactly thinking ipod speaker docks for a desktop solution.

Creative has those yellow driver speakers, forgot the name...Creative GigaWorks T20 and T40 I think, .those are decent for the price and can quite easily fill a room, and are compact.

I would put convinience and practicality over sound quality for your requirements, cos you dont want to be tugging around heavy speakrers with an amp during travel.

I wouldve said Boston Acoustics but the amp that comes with those speakers is quite heavy and I wouldnt recommend for travel. But otherwise, they are one of the best small profile desktop speakers I've heard without a sub.
