Actually if it's a music sub you want the lower ported versions not the 25hz one. 25hz models are good if you have a big room and need higher spl and dont mind not going as low as the other models. Or with the PC Ultra 13 you could plug all plugs and make it sealed.

I have had an offer for a B&W asw300 for 250$ or a mirage FRX-s12 for 200$, both plus shipping but its in canada so I save a bunch. Anyone has any experiences using those?

I believe an 8" sub will be more "fast, tight and accurate" than say a 10" or 12" sub. In general, a 10" or 12" sub will sound slow, loud, and deep.

Which makes me wonder...why doesn't someone make a 2 way sub where you have one 8" driver to play the mid bass and one 15" driver to play the deep bass.

You're wrong. Also a typical 8" subwoofer - say in a 1' sealed box, or slightly larger ported box, won't be able to play deep, without lots of distortion

Velodyne 1812. Has two drivers, 18" and 15"

okay. to clarify, an 8" sub will play mid bass more accurately than a larger driver but the larger driver will play deep bass more accurately. am i still wrong?

thanks for letting me know about the velodyne 1812 but it's 385 lbs and $13k!

It depends on what you define as "mid-bass". Typically speaking, 8" subwoofers can be pretty decent and, especially when ported, can go all the way down to 25Hz. That's only 5Hz away from human's lower frequency limit. Especially if you spend the money to get there.

A larger woofer WOULD have an easier time to get to 25Hz and lower, but it doesn't take that much bigger of a woofer to get to 20Hz or so. In fact, there are a number of 10" subs that hit 20Hz and/or slightly below at the -3db limit. 12" will have a much easier time and go all the way to 16Hz on some expensive models, I believe.

But for the most part, an 8" sub can do a good bit of the bass work by itself.
