good amp for both headphones and speakers

There are lots of good choices, depending on your cans and speakers. For high eff. speakers (> 90 dB) and Senns, a Berning microZotl is a good choice for about $750 new. For K1000s, RKV as recommended. Any 2A3 or 300b tube amp will also drive K1000s and high eff speakers. Cary 2A3 would be in your budget, used.

Are there good amp that work well for both purpose (fine amping headphones and also speakers?

Yes, MOSFET amps such as the SDS Labs have enough oomph and finesse for both headphones and speakers. The 18A MOSFETs amb and I are using for our new amp project drive his livingroom speakers to impressive volume levels.

i could be wrong, but ANY solid state headphone amp can be used to power efficient speakers.

In fact, all it needs is a SS output stage.

I use my maestrobator to power my 99db/w lowthers.

I've used my RA-1 to power them.

my speaker wire is soldered to a headphone jack (neutrik)

the wire itself is just ratshack 24guage solid core intercom wire. (copper)

For the money try to audition some NAD amps. I have the T741 surround and am very happy with it. I believe the stereo amps are supposed to have even better sound...

Cheers,

By the way, I think you can get a headphone jack installed on the Sophia Baby for another $100.

It would still be best to use speaker cable adapter for the K1000's, though. That way it will be balanced output.
