Good 2.1 setup?

Consider auditioning the Aego2, I use it and am very pleased with the sound.

It also won Stereophile's Joint Budget Product of the Year runners-up position for 2001.

Runners-Up (in alphabetical order):
Acoustic Energy AEGO2 loudspeaker ($599/pair with active subwoofer; reviewed by Michael Fremer, Vol.24 No.3, March 2001)

I don't know how much it sells these days(it's not $599 anymore, don't worry), I got mine for $199 or so. In the UK you can buy them straight from Acoustic Energy for £79.00.

Hrm, no budget stated eh?

Here's my planned 2.1 system:

DIY Dennis Murphy designed MBOW1 $600 with all premium parts and a botched paint job, there are cheaper finishing options than the botched paint. (Already have it)

JVC RX-ES1SL digital receiver $200 (Already have it)

GR Research 12" Passive radiator sub (Will probably build it by the end of this month or thereabouts)

EMU1212m (Already have it)

Non oversampling dac (Hopefully have it by the end of a month)

In the far future, I'll probably diy an AKSA55 power amp.

I personally consider the speakers to have about $2000 worth of sound quality and the JVC replaced about $700 of alternative means of amplification, so I think it's a pretty good deal. The sub I haven't heard, so I'm taking a chance on it. Should be good, methinks. Same with the dac. This is a good 2.1 system (IMHO.)

Unfortunately a decent PC speaker setup is still being sought out. Sorry, but the jury is still out on this one.
