Yesterday, while browsing through the audio test equipment at PartsExpress, I came across the Gold Line HPAJr. It is a portable headphone amplifier in an aluminum enclosure with quarter-inch input and output jacks. It feeds off two 9V batteries or a 12-18V power supply, and has adjustable input sensitivity and switchable stereo/mono output. The pricetag at PartsExpress is $98.80.

Searching here didn't turn up any mention of the HPAJr. Has no-one heard it yet?

Surprising, but apparently not.

This amp came to my attention when a similar question was posted on the HeadWize forum about six months ago. No response.

I too was intrigued by the description of this little amplifier. In fact, about the only thing that put me off was the requirement to remove and replace four screws in order to change the batteries.

The PDF manual states battery life is around six hours, although presumably that would vary with respect to load and volume. But the amp's power output at 18V is really quite respectable:

At $98.80 to $126.00 this amp certainly seems like it would be a better performer than the inexpensive Red Sound Micro Amp, another commercial 2x9 volt amp that is virtually unknown and almost never mentioned.

I hadn't read the battery-replacement instructions. That would certainly be a pain for mobile users. Not much of an issue for me, though; I would merely need to find a good 18V adapter.

I'm tempted to find out how the HPAJr compares to my Airhead (old two-AA version).

Usually this amps for pro use, are very powerful, but the sound is far from a really good one, in this case who knows and maybe is a good amp, I would like to see the porns, or at least any comment of what is in fact inside.....
