Going Bald
Feb 9, 2006 at 5:57 PM Post #16 of 43
I have had some thinning around the crown so I started using Rogaine and it's worked, filled in the crown nicely compared to how sparse it looked before. Try it out, its $60, iirc, for a 3 month supply and yes, I did notice a difference after a few weeks of using it on a daily basis. Eventually my hair line will start really receding and well, I'll just wearing a ninja cap.

I know a guy who had lost nearly all of it by 25. Losing your hair isn't as bad as you think and is much better than pumping your body full of drugs (especially when you STILL lose the hair).

I recommend acceptance. Take the money you would spend on crazy drugs, hair transplants, etc. and replace that missing hair with a nice new pair of headphones. Bound to make you much happier.

I'm 18 and I started going bald at around 17.

Besides the fact that you're treating different being bald it's all the same.

I remember someone talking about finastride or some type of shampoo, try a google search.

It's better than having the balding line be obvious.

That's not a problem - just a sign of time. And you won't really be going bald, believe me - at least not on an absolute scale, as what disappears from the top will all pop up again on whatever unexspected place on your body you can imagine. Believe me (been there, done that - blah...)!

Yup! You've gotta shave it right away... that's totally IN! I don't think the comb-over has ever worked.

I'm sure in a few years I'll be posting this thread... my family history does not bode well for me. Do they make headphones with integrated wigs?

I was going bald at 16. Saw the doctor, started taking Zinc, a few injections on my neck and skull, some liquid nitrogren on my the injection marks coupled with rogaine and BOOYA - I got my hair back. I stopped using about a year later and I am completely fine and dandy now.

"Fine and dandy" apart from the large green apple growing out of your nose..... is that a side effect of the baldness medication?

I'm not certain what to do about hair loss in the long run (since I haven't experienced it), but an ex of mine couldn't utter the name Frescobaldi without giggling.

However:

Having spoken with a dermatologist last year in a blind animal panic after a bad head-lice treatment resulted in a bit of shedding (forty hairs or so), my understanding is that one sort of medicine treats male pattern baldness, the other, the receding hairline. Between the side-effects of the two treatments, I doubt one has any sex drive left, but at least one's pate retains fuzz. (Modern pharmacology totters on -- and sells bonus helpings of Viagra.)

The other thing the good acne doc mentioned was that one should begin to treat hair loss as soon as one notices the problem. At this stage, keeping one's present hair is all one can hope for without a transplant, not gaining what's lost.

I started to lose my hair in my late 20's.

I tried Rogain, and experienced zero improvement. That doesn mean it doesn't wok, just didn't work for me. As far as other treatments, you should ask your doctor. As another person posted above, sometimes hair loss at an early age can be due to an underlying medical problem and can be reversed. If it's hereditary, the realistic options are:

A) Transplant
B) Gillete Mach3 Turbo and some shave cream (my preferred method)
