The fact that I'm not really superstitious, to say the least. Also, I don't believe ghosts are supposed to form shadows are they?

Hi All!

As a binaural sound artist specialising in 3-D surround sound headphone concerts, I thought I'd share a few experiences and ideas.

Headphone presentation offers a unique set of listening qualities that can go in a variety of directions.

For people enjoying dance music, and concerned about levels, individually controlled headsets allows each individual to set a level that they feel comfortable with, without interfering with those nearby, however the experience of music over headphones is different to speakers as the somatic (body-feel) of bass is absent, and the whole experience is more cerebral. It is certainly up to the individual to control their own personal sound level, although I have no idea of the maximum SPL (sound pressure level) that the systems employed will deliver to the ears.

But a more exciting aspect of headphone presentation is the ability to deliver full periphonic (spherical surround, above, below, sides, back and front) using binaural techniques. This is spherical encoding using real or virtual technologies and can deliver spherical surround spatial mixes of music and real or abstract soundscapes.

For the "chill-out" and "ambient" devotee headphone binaural is a superlative presentation medium allowing full three dimensional spatial presentation with sounds appearing to come from outside your head in the real space around you.

I have recorded a small catalogue of music in binaural for various artists and I have a vast catalogue of personal environmental soundscape works. There are a few commercial recordings in this format, and I have been trying to expand the binaural genre for a number of years.

For a recent binaural (surround sound) music release in the Celtic/Ambient style try "From Silence" by Troy Donockley and Dave Bainbridge. For something a little more jazzy and upbeat trythe Hendrix classic "Little Wing" by the Ric Sanders Group with Rick Wakeman, from an album recorded live at Lincoln Cathedral (UK). .

There are other binaural releases, like Down to the Wood from Martin Stephenson and Jim Hornsby, Live at Ambergate from Gordon Giltrap and some more in the pipeline from Roger Eno, Howard Riley and Rick Wakeman.

All the above are available through Voiceprint.

Also there are some good headphone binaural 3-D environmental soundscapes for download on my website:

Try the fireworks for a bit of fun!

headphones essential!

Placard International Headphone Concerts.

For those resident in the London area there is the London Placard Headphone Festival run each year through State 51. Originating from Paris about eight years ago, Placard is an international free entry event involving linking listening rooms around the world by the internet - New York, Paris, London and other centres. Each centre takes a turn at performing headphone concerts live, while the other centres listen via the internet on headphones. London has a "bring your own headphones" policy.

All the best,

Dallas Simpson.
