pbirkett, you might want to try tube amps as well as vinyl records. both have an undeniably natural, organic quality that allows one to get closer to the music, and father from the sound. the only problem is they take up a lot of space

i'd also dump the cd3k. those headphones lack force in the midrange - the most important part of the musical spectrum.

agreed. recently I deleted all my mp3s and left the cds they were ripped from at my parents' house. as I began a new collection, mainly through buying cheap used CDs, I became intimately familiar with each album before adding another. this has been much more satisfying. I'm positive I would not have listened to woody guthrie's dust bowl ballads, for instance, enough to find out how great they are if I had thousands of mp3s vying for my attention.

John_jcb beat me to it and I was gonna suggest you get together with some friends and listen. This is a cycle we all go through, including me,and I need to hang out every once in a while to keep my ears peaked and interests fresh.

If you ever find yourself in Chicago feel free to shoot me a PM and we can hang out and listen. Quite a few passers-through have hung out with me and some of the other Chicago head-fiers and we always have a good time.

I've been able to get into my head-fi habits since college has began, but now that it is summer, I have to decide where I want to spend my money.....Audio stuff or Photography stuff. Not that I have any money to spend anyway, but I want to figure out where I want to spend the little money that I have.

I'm in a similar situation myself now. I've told myself, thats it. Enough on the hifi. Start saving up. Over the past few years i've spent a crazy amount of my wealth on hifi. The final nail in the coffin was when I visited the local Lotus dealer to test drive an Elise. Right well i'm getting one in October as funds allow. Nuff said!
