lets not forget real (read: not virtual) brick and mortar stores...before I took the plunge I would frequent audio stores and actually sample the stuff---this way you know what it sounds like and there is less a possibility of buyers remorse...of course sometimes you are limited by what the particular store has in stock but it can help more generally to find out if you like the ss sound or the tube sound...most audio shops are quite helpful and you can bring your own cans and what i find is most helpful a custom burned cd with your favorite all around tracks (a little rock, jazz, vocals, classical) to get an idea of the range and/or limitations of the kit
