Im looking to get a nice gaming headset, want full surround, either true 5.1 or virtual is fine as long as its good.  I also want open or semi open headphones so i can hear if someone else is trying to talk to me, or hear my phone.  They have to work with the ps3 and preferrably both PS3 and Xbox.

Here is where i get a bit confused tho.  I dont only use headphones, there are a lot of times i want to use my surround setup and not use the headphones.  Is there an easy way to set the headphones up so that both the headphones and the surround can work without having to switch wires?  Would just a simple optical splitter work so that both the surround and the headset are recieving audio at the same time, and just turn the 1 i dont want to listen to off?

For virtual surround sound you can use one of these 2 "mixamps"

http://www.astrogaming.com/mixamp-pro-2013-edition

http://www.turtlebeach.com/product-detail/dolby-processor-accessories/ear-force-dss2/33

These work on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 and will give you surround sound.

I don't know if you need a mic but if you need one you can pick something like this:

Now, all that's left is to pick a headphone that has nice detail and a wide soundstage so you can use them for gaming.

Name your budget and my fellow head fiers and I will recommend you a headphone.
