Gaming Headphones + Amp

The beyer DT770/80 are very good for gaming and I like them a lot for their close design so I won't get distracted by ambient noise. If you have enough cash to spare, get the Darths

OK, probably my title was a bit misleading, which pair of headphones, under $200 will provide me with amazing SQ, while gaming or playing music?

the usual advice:

no amp and under $200 = Audio technica ATH-A900

if you have an amp already, DT770 Pro + amp would be good also.

A900 bass 2/10. DT 770 6/10. Ultrasone Proline 750 9.5/10

boom factor Proline>DT770>A900.

Punch factor Proline>A900>DT 770

Bass extension Proline>DT770>......>A900

Ultrasone HFI-700 is the direct competitor I guess

. Proline 650 is a bit more expensive.

OK, so I did a bit more reading, and this is what I came up with (nothing new for you guys, but new for me

):

+The DT770 is the best for gaming
-It requires an amp to sound good
*There are two versions (what's the difference between the two?)

+The A900 is a "jack of all trades"
+It's good for almost anything
+It doesn't require and amp
-It's big and clunky
-The headband is a bit weird

+The HFI-700 is awesome for music, but isn't the best for gaming
+It is really portable with the folding design
-It's somewhat uncomfortable to wear for a long time
-It's not uncommon for one to sweat more easily with them on

From what I can gather, I think I will go for the Darth Beyers, since there is such a large fan base (a good thing!) for it. As many have said, the Darths require an amp to sound decent, so i will have to purchase a separate amp. I've posted in the Amp section about this, but they haven't been particularly helpful. I was looking at the following amps:

-Xin SuperMacro IV (dunno if I'm in for the 4+ month wait...)
-Emmeline SR-71 (the only source of power is from 2 9V batteries right?)
-Emmeline The Hornet "M"
-Original Master
-HeadRoom Micro Amp
-Xenos 1HA-EPC

BTW, they all need to have TWO sources of power---either from a wall socket or thru batteries.

just for your consideration, I found the HD595 pretty good with gaming and listen to music without using an amp.

the headphone is easy to drive, and the detail is decent.

IMO, it looks pretty ugly...

I just ordered the Equation Audio RP-21. They're supposed to have a nice clear sound, big soundstage and good bass. They don't need an amp either. If you hold off on buying, I'll give you my impressions when I get them. (I play CSS too.)

I don't feel the headband is weird at all, they fit perfectly and are very comfortable. At lest the LTD is, for me.
I have tried the old DT770 and it had a higher clamping force than my AT's, I would rate my AT's higher in comfort than the dt770. (but the beyer isn't uncomfortable)
I can't comment on the heat factor on the DT770, but on really hot summer days my AT's can become a bit sweaty. (But that's not so much of a problem if you live in Sweden.

)

Note that the pads on the LTD is slightly different than the regular model. But the construction is the same.

yes, that's it!

Forget the amp for gaming! you'll just hear the gaming sounds imperfections! (dont think game sounds are @224kbps higher!!!

)

grab the A900 and just pkug them into your pc!

Cheers man!

A700 or A900, DT770 or DT880. For an amp, you can get your feet wet in DIY and build a CMoy with a OPA2227 or OPA2107 op-amp. Or ask for one built in the DIY or Amp FS boards, they're pretty cheep. Or if you want a better amp, build or buy a PIMETA

DT880 with cmoy?... humm, do you think it can drive them?
