Just to let you know....the Gallos are very power hungry. You'll want ATLEAST 150 w/channel - most people power them with 200 watt or more monoblocks.

The Gallo 3.1's are my favorite speakers. Unfortunately since I moved and downsized I just can't fit them in my room

I never heard the 3.1' and 3's side by side. The 3.1's are an evolution of the 3's rather than a re-design. They're definitely better, but the improvements are subtle rather than radical. I would think that with your history of past and present equipment that these improvements would be noticeable to you and worth the extra. You'd always wonder if you got the 3's instead of the 3.1's, wouldn't you

.

My favorite amplification with the Gallos was Quicksilver V4 monoblocks, YMMV. There was a recent thread that (with some detours along the way) discussed the Gallos and amplification.

Gallo ftw...they just look rad..(and they have killer sound)

If you don't care about brands, Emotiva is a rising star in internet-direct audio gear, their XPA amp line is pretty amazing for the price. (~$500 for a 2-ch)

If you care about brands, Parasound is solid.
