I have an integrated amp with a dual volume pot and one channel is audible before the other as you turn the volume up from zero. I can't tell at reasonable volume levels but it is annoying for low level listening. What could be the cause of this? is it most likely to be the volume pot??

Yeah it's due to the pot itself.

You say one channel is audible before the other, at what stage in the volume is this? The first 20degrees or so of pot rotation are highly unstable in almost all cases where a normal pot is used. This channel imbalance happens often even on the most expensive preamps.

You could increase the gain so that normal listening is done outside the dead range of the pot.
