I really am wanting a 555 but hard to find and expensive (for me). If I were to get the 222 and get it modded by MA, I wonder how it would compare to MarkL and other's modded 555?

sacdlover (Earl) is probably the only one who can help here. If you read the Hot Rod thread, look for his comments on the 222ES. To summarize-- he feels it is a real bargain, and brings you a lot of the way toward the 555ES Hot Rod. Cheers.

The 222es is just as good a value for the money as the 555es. A new 222es with mods runs $725-750 vs approximately $1200 for the sacdmods 555es. The best way to sum up the 222es is that you get a player with a little bit less of everything vs the 555es. The sacdmods 222es is the one I have been recommending because they are both inexpensive and readily available. If you want the player for headphones only I would definately look at the 222es. The difference between the two is much closer using headphones. Once I start listening and stop comparing the 222es vs 555es, the 222es is equally satisfying and very refined. I have two sacdmods 222es's and I never miss the 555es when I am using headphones.

Thank you for your post. I dug through MarkL's thread and found your comments and had figured most of this out. Thanks for making it simple. I will probably order a 222 and have it modded soon...I plan to listen to headphones only through it. This new SACD2 stuff is a bit scary but I guess I will have to just hope for the best, and I always have my large redbook collection to fall back on if SACD dies...which I doubt.

Thanks again, I will let you know. I guess I will need to contact MA to set up a time, or just drop ship the unit to him and let him get to it when he can.

Lance, I think what's also important is what headphones you use. If you use a HD600 or CD3K, probably a 222ES modded is more than enough. However, if you have something more such as a Orpheus, R10, etc, than for sure 555ES hotrod.
