Hi,
 
This is my first post on this forum, and the automated message suggested I post here.
 
I am looking for a pair of fully closed headphones that will mainly be used with my laptop (Macbook Air), phone (Galaxy S4) and perhaps with my TV for movies.
I've considered the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 Ohms, Shure SRH840, and Audio Technica ATH-M50. I know with all of these a dedicated (portable) DAC/Amp would be more or less needed as my phone especially could not power them to full potential. I've also considered a Fiio E07K (my overall budget is =£200, as I'm a student

)
 
I'm leaning towards the DT770 Pro 80 Ohms (apparently a very comfy and great sounding headphone), but some reckon it's for studio use only. I really don't know where to go from here, I've usually just been an in-ear person, preferring portability, but I'll keep these new headphones for home use and long journeys.
 
Any input or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Buy a 32 ohm (Denon or Sony) closed model and you likely that dont need additional amplifier. Put all your money into the heaphone hoping that pricier will be better. Sony mdr 1 is fine. If you are not afraid of used headphones have a look into the sell section. I have recently seen there a sony mdr cd 2000 for around the same money. That was (still) a flagship product, worth the price. If you dont like, you can easily sell.

I would pick DT770 250 Ohm and Fiio E07K. Otherwise I would pick Shure Srh-840.
DT770 80 Ohm and E07K is the best pick if you are a basshead.

Thank you for such a quick response! Have you any specific models of Sony or Denon that you would suggest? I had a quick look at those Sony MDR-CD2000 that you suggested, but they appear to be closed front, open back which I don't really want to go for as I will be in close proximity of people. Also, you suggest 32 ohm models, is there a substantial difference between a 32 ohm and say an 80 ohm model? I want to buy a DAC/amp anyway, and people say a headphone driven by a dedicated amp is much better. Sorry if I am coming across a complete idiot, I know little about this subject, and I'm learning all the time lol!

Thank you for your quick response! I do like a bit of bass but nothing overpowering, as I mentioned in my previous post I know little about this subject, and I'm just interested to see if people laugh at my choices, and see what others suggest. Thanks again.

Like Me x3 suggested already, you will be happy with DT 770 250 Ohm, if you intend to buy also E07k.

Thanks for your reply, I had a quick look on Fiio's website for full technical specs, and it states that the max driver capability of the E07K is only 100Ω, or is this something different? The way I look it at, it will only be able to drive the 32Ω and the 80Ω models. Also, do you think there are any better phones for around £140? I've looked at reviews everywhere, some reckon the DT 770's are great whilst what-hifi only gave them 3 stars.

This head fier is powering DT 880 250 Ohm phones with E 7, http://www.head-fi.org/t/692609/beyer-dt-880-pro-vs-senn-hd-598-maybe-others#post_10021416. E 07 K would drive DT 770 250 Ohm version with no problems.

Quick question, does anyone know how the return service works on Amazon if I'm not satisfied with my purchases (say the DT 770 Pro 250 Ohm and a Fiio E07K)? I know I could sell but I don't want to lose money straight off the bat and not a few years down the line.

I purchased the M50s about a month ago and absolutely love them. They make music very enjoyable. I've downloaded a countless number of songs because they make music that much more enjoyable. I do not have an amp for mine and my laptop (Lenovo Yoga 13) can make these things crank. If you you your new headphones with your Android device I strongly recommend you download Poweramp Pro for your music player because the eq settings are by far the best of any apps I have tried.

The M50 has been just about $100 on amazon for the past two weeks or so. I think they are a steal for that price!

I know a lot of people shoot down the M50 because they think they are overrated, but they are an excellent high-entry/lower-middle level set of cans. They make music very enjoyable, not to mention the very good build quality!

Fiio E07K can properly drive 250 Ohm Beyers.
 
E07K has 3 gain levels:
 
0dB
6dB
12dB
 
Inside each level you can set the volume between 0 and 60.
 
I use my DT990 250 Ohm which are probably a bit harder to drive than DT770 250 Ohm with my E07K at 6dB and volume around 32 for music in general; and up to 45 when listening to some classical pieces or audiophile recordings with wide dynamic range.
