I bought the AKG K812 headphones to plug straight into my Wavelength Proton USB DAC and the results are not impressive so far.  I chose those headphones because they are supposed to sound great without a headphone amp.  Now I'm thinking I may have to give up on that approach and buy a headphone amp after all.  Maybe a set of HD800 headphones instead of the K812s.

I really like Red Wine Audio gear since it's battery-powered.  Has anyone used their stuff with headphones?  Can I use a regular stereo amp with headphones instead of an amp made specifically for headphones, and just buy a special headphone cable to connect to the RCA outputs?  I don't need portability at all.

With flagship cans, it makes no sense to skimp on your rig.  Decide on the can you want and them join the discussion of that can on a thread elsehwere in the foru--eith under Summit-Fi or Equipment Forums--Full Sized Headphones or Headphone Amps.
