from sr225s to HD650?
Dec 27, 2006 at 10:20 PM Post #16 of 29
Are there any other type of headphones I should consider in this price range (300) that I should consider? I dont know much about the AKGs and the Beyers, I have always been a grado guy. Are the 650's too laid back to rock out on?

From my experience the 650 is a huge upgrade over the 225. Quite frankly, at least in my system the 225 is not even in the same ballpark as the 650. The 650 is more resolving, fuller, cleaner sounding, better balanced, smoother highs, more bass, & even has more punch & impact than the 225 hands down.

because of this thread, I dug out my wife's 225s and compared them to my 650s (running out of a Microdac/Heed). Please take no offense Grado people: the
225s seemed like a lightweight headphone by comparison. Good upper registers,
good percussion, decent bass but too harsh and shrill. The 650s were smoother,
more engaging and much better realism.

I agree! I have the Sennheiser HD 650, 595, and the Grados 225. 650 Has the best detail, best soundstage, deeper bass than the other cans that I have. The 225, IMHO is really best for Rock and metal. You gotta hear Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody on those! What an experience.

Well IMHO, if you're a Grado guy, a Sennheiser would be the best compliment to a given Grado

They're more polar opposites then AKGs or Beyer. Haven't listened to Beyer yet, but AKG I just find weird sounding. The 325i seems like the best opposite to the HD650: 325 is completely colored towards the treble and has some awesome detail for some hard rock. The HD650 has the potential to be the best all around headphone around. IMHO, it actually does better with rock then the HD580 and 600. 595 is up on the air, because the 595 is easier to drive and is brighter to rock in in a different way. Grados I like for electric guitar or vocals. The HD650 is the other end of the spectrum where it's great for percusions. You'll be liking electronica on a whole new level if you're just coming from Grado.

From a Grado listener (HF-1, SR60, iGrado) - the HD580 price at Amazon was too tempting to pass up. I've had the 580's for a couple of weeks and am very impressed (both sound and comfort wise). A nice alternative to the Grados - $125 well spent, IMO. They do want power, however. I'm pushing my with a Headroom Micro Amp (desktop module).

So what's HD595 for then?

What about the Beyer DT990's?
How do those compare to the HD650s?
I am considering getting either one since I found them for a similar price.
This is for the 2005 version BTW. Do they have any flaws? How do they sound compared to the senns? I dont know much about beyers.

EDIT: I hear the 990s can be a little shrill at times and I thought my 225s were also a little too peaky with some recordings. Is the 650 right for me? The only thing I am concerned with is that people say that it isnt good for rock music since it is "laid-back." I like the intensity of the grados, but I also want something a bit smoother but still be able to headbang with. When I had the HD570s way back (first "good" can i purchased), I liked the chilled out sound. Are the 990s less intense than the grado's or are they just "different"?

Congrats.....and welcome to team Sennheiser

The 650 is just one of those headphones that keeps getting better with source upgrades. So I think it will sound decent on the Creek....and then hopefully will sound better on the SOHA. Might as well listen to it with what you have....stop thinking so much and just listen to the music!

Initially, I bought the 595 and 225 myself then got the 650s for Christmas from my fiancee. I have not been able to use the 595s much since I got the 650s though. I really liked the 595s for soundstage, warm sound, detail and comfort compared to the 225s but it seems the 650s have bested them in most, if not all aspects.

You won't regret this. The 650's are awesome, best headphone I've used so far. I haven't even felt the need to buy anything else.
